Soon more and more players began entering the world of Tibia and now the once small RPG game was growing by the day. Therefore CipSoft decided to start the Beta phase on May 20th, 1998. This update increased the number of people allowed online at a given time but it also had the effect of making their server obsolete as it was too small to handle so many players. This caused CipSoft in the end to buy their own server (tibia.uni-passau.de). They set it up on July 2nd, 1998.

Nowadays Tibia is known as a big world with many isles, dungeons and monsters. But Tibia didn't always look like that.

Everything started in 1995 when 3 students wanted to make a difference. Back then games were text based and didn't have a graphic interface. The students are known as the gods Steve (Stephan Vogler), Durin (Ulrich Schlott) and Stephan (Stephan Börzsönyi). Guido actually started as a normal player and joined the ranks of an Executive Officer in 1999.

First plans were forged in spring 1996 and realised in autumn of the same year. On January the 7th, 1997 Tibia saw the light of day. You were able to choose different outfits, talking with other players and moving/dropping/taking items. Three days later Albe has been the first visitor in Tibia. But only a few people have visited Tibia however nonetheless the development went on.

So it came to the first big update on June 3rd, 1997 (version Alpha 2.0) where the first NPC (Sam) and monsters (trolls, spiders and cyclopses), papers to write permanent messages plus the third dimension were introduced. From now on players were able to fight against monsters and leaving messages with papers for others.

With version Alpha 3.0 (October 28th, 1997) lots of new features followed e.g. temporal effects, cumulable objects, liquids, a new fighting system, the automap, movement in all three dimensions, different times of day and light sources, and a complete move/use-system. Also the first big city were created, Tibia or Tibia City. Tibia/Tibia city is nowadays known as Thais and has been named (like all old cities) after a bone. This city contained a few buildings (the Temple, Frodo's tavern, Gorn's equipment shop, Sam's armoury, the Castle). And that is why they had to replace the map for a bigger one (from 160 x 160 fields to 512 x 512 fields). Moreover new monster races have joined Tibia (dragons, minotaurs, wolves and bears).

Tibia - Version 3.1

While Tibia became more known, they developed a magic system and also added vocations plus skills to Tibia. You didn't buy spells in a shop but received them as loot or quest item in the form of a scroll. That's why some older Paladins are able to use Energy Beam etc. It might be interesting for players to know that Broadcast was a spell which every player with magic level 4 was able to cast (words: exisa mas "text). (First versions of it sent the text on the screen and on the Default Channel. They later changed that so it only was shown in the default. The broadcast system was removed because they updated the client to the 7.0 client with the chat channels.)

Annoying Broadcasts!

Even the famous summon spell has been around in this time. It was possible to summon dragons. However there was a catch in it when you logged out summons did not disappear but started to act like the wild ones and if you killed them they didn't even give you experience points. This was a way to trap and kill players.

Furthermore the Royal Tibian Mail and the depot system were added. Depots weren't a protection zone and you had to be careful when entering those places because there were lots of playerkillers around. And notice that you have lost your whole equipment after a death. It is also worth to mention that there wasn't any deathlist so it was hard to prove that you were killed by a certain player.
